California Interfaith Partnership for Children's Health and the Environment
Exciting New ACCW Project – Includes Speaker Training.
At the March business meeting of the Archdiocesan Council of
Catholic Women's board of directors, members voted to expand on their
work with the California Interfaith Partnership for Children's Health
and the Environment in carrying the message of how children's health is
impacted by pollution and other synthetic chemicals in the environment
and what individuals can do to lessen this impact.
Ilegra Evans and Loretta Tyson have been active with the Interfaith Partnership since its inception. Our Los Angeles Council received an award at the NCCW National Confrence two years ago as a result of local successes.
Now, Suellen Lowry, the director of the Interfaith Project, has offered ACCW a stipend to participate in a speakers program. The Volunteer speakers will be asked to attend a brief training session on April 24th following the 10:00 am 4th annual ACCW Mass at the Cathedral. Suellen will be present to conduct the training and provide all materials.
We would ask people who attend the training to make brief, 3-5 minute announcements and hand out materials at upcoming meetings they regularly attend where such a presentation would be appropriate. The training will be easy, basically getting together over coffee and tea for about 60 minutes to hand out sample announcements, go over the materials and talk more about the Interfaith Partnership and its work, just to increase people's depth of understanding. The Interfaith Partnership will make multiple copies of materials as needed over the next few months. It should be an easy way to get the word out to even more families in the Los Angeles archdiocese.
ACCW President Judie Perez has asked each of the District Presidents to recruit at least one volunteer from her district to become a speaker and to send the names to Judie by March 29th. June Myles, from Central, has led the way by being the first volunteer.
May others join this core group of 12? Of course! Leave your name at our office: (213) 637-6394, or e-mail Chairperson Loretta Tyson at: Loretta.Tyson@CatholicWomenLA.org.
Here's an easy way to make the world a better place for present and future generations. Step up and speak out! Please!
Knitting / Crocheting for The Needy
This is a project which has resulted in many thousands of afghans being distributed to the homeless or others in need. It is is accomplished by women all over the archdiocese collecting scraps of yarn, knitting or crocheting them into squares and binding the squares together forming afghans. This very popular project is an inspiring example of the generosity of many people working together to accomplish a great good.
If you would like to participate in this very worthwhile project you can do so by donating yarn or knitting/crocheting. The directions on how the afghans are made, or any other information you may need, can be obtained from the ACCW office (213) 637-7394.
Elizabeth Ministry
The Los Angeles Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, under the umbrella of the Office of Family Life, is starting a new program in our Archdiocese “Elizabeth Ministry”.
WHAT IS ELIZABETH MINISTRY?
Elizabeth Ministry is an international movement designed to support women and their families during the joys, challenges and sorrows of the childbearing years. Our mission is to praise God, cherish children,
encourage families and build community.
We offer peer support, mentoring, educational materials, spiritual nourishment, inspirational keepsakes and resources. Elizabeth Ministry Chapters exist across the US as well as in Canada, Europe & Third World countries.
WHY IS IT NEEDED?
In the past, the presence, intimacy, and support that is needed during childbearing years was found in the family, neighborhood church and community.
Today, these structures are undergoing rapid change. Neighborhoods are fragmented, leaving many families isolated. Churches have increased in size, making it very difficult to create a hospitable and loving environment. Today’s mobility has caused many extended families to be separated by miles, making frequent visits impossible.
Yet the wisdom drawn from sharing our stories of the joys and trials of childbearing is still needed. The support, reassurance and encouragement, usually given by the extended family, often now needs to come from another source. Elizabeth Ministry is a response to this need.
HOW DOES THE MINISTRY WORK?
An Elizabeth Minister will be a link with the broader church community. This outreach enables women to be mentors for one another in the maternal mysteries of life. No lengthy training is needed for the volunteers. Elizabeth Ministers are not counselors, they are simply women who wish to help other women.
Volunteers become Elizabeth Ministers in the areas they have experience. For example, a woman who has twins would visit and mentor a woman who is pregnant with twins. Support is given throughout the pregnancy and after birth. This support comes in the form of visits, phone calls, cards, prayer, resources and other assistance. Visits may take place at homes, the hospital or church.
The areas of Elizabeth Ministry include, but are not limited to, pregnancy, birth, miscarriage, infant or child death, crisis or special needs, adoption, fertility and infertility. Support is available for mothers, fathers, siblings and grandparents.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Elizabeth Ministry helps support a faith community in it’s commitment toward the sanctity of life & offers a way to reach young adults as they build their families. It provides a focused and expanded dimension to bereavement ministry. It offers wisdom in this age of reproduction technology. It builds community and fulfills the invitation of Jesus, namely, that we love one another as He loves us.
JEANNIE HANNAMANN, M.A., founder of Elizabeth Ministry, will present two Seminars on Nov. 10th, and 11th.
